The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire and a Belgian colony, is mainly popular among tourists who are keen to visit the tropical rainforest.
It is always hot and humid in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has a rainfall of at least 1,600 millimetres per year. The best time to travel to the country depends on which part of it you wish to visit: north or south of the equator. Most rain falls between May and September in the north and between September and May in the south.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has the biggest area of tropical rainforest, with about 10,000 different species of trees and other plants. The animals inhabiting the tropical rainforest include rare mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and baboons. The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is certainly worth a visit. It contains about 20 families of gorillas living in a protected environment.
